In Tajikistan, discrimination based on tuberculosis can lead to poor treatment outcomes. Due to a lack of knowledge about the causes of tuberculosis and effective treatment methods, loved ones may turn away from and be ashamed of a patient. This can lead to delays in seeking treatment and non-adherence to the treatment plan. He has experienced tuberculosis twice and lost loved ones to the disease.<\/p>\n<p>In 2011, while\u00a0Umarali was\u00a0working on a flour milling machine in the Russian Federation,\u00a0he\u00a0fell ill with tuberculosis.\u00a0He\u00a0began treatment\u00a0and continued to work. In 2018, after returning to his home\u00a0country, Umarali reported\u00a0that he had\u00a0tuberculosis of\u00a0the\u00a0lymphatic tissue\u00a0in the city of Nurek,\u00a0in southern Tajikistan.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Umarali talks about\u00a0the stigma\u00a0he faced during his illness.\u00a0&#8220;When I got tuberculosis\u00a0a\u00a0second time, people\u00a0started\u00a0to point fingers at me. My friends and acquaintances\u00a0stopped\u00a0meeting\u00a0with\u00a0me. When I\u00a0went to\u00a0a place, people\u00a0would\u00a0stand\u00a0up. It\u00a0felt\u00a0like\u00a0I would\u00a0never\u00a0be able to\u00a0lead\u00a0a\u00a0normal\u00a0social life\u00a0again.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-380 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2x.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2x.webp 1200w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2x-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2x-1024x575.webp 1024w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/2x-768x431.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Umarali could not imagine\u00a0living\u00a0in a society where his rights were\u00a0not\u00a0respected.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For two long years, Umarali struggled with tuberculosis.\u00a0Throughout\u00a0his\u00a0treatment, Umarali\u00a0demonstrated\u00a0curiosity and asked\u00a0his\u00a0doctors\u00a0questions about\u00a0how and when to take medication, why it\u00a0was\u00a0important to follow a healthy diet,\u00a0and how best to\u00a0adhere to\u00a0a treatment\u00a0plan. Umarali\u00a0remained\u00a0determined to recover, so despite the side effects\u00a0of the medication, he continued\u00a0taking\u00a0the\u00a0drugs in\u00a0order to achieve\u00a0his goal.\u00a0In early 2020, while\u00a0he was\u00a0still\u00a0undergoing\u00a0treatment,\u00a0Umarali\u00a0attended one of the informational\u00a0sessions\u00a0organized by the USAID Tuberculosis Control Project\u00a0field workers\u00a0in Central Asia in the city of Nurek.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Umarali fondly\u00a0remembers\u00a0the event organized\u00a0as\u00a0part\u00a0of the project\u00a0&#8211;\u00a0&#8220;For\u00a0the first time,\u00a0I felt positive\u00a0about\u00a0myself. The words of\u00a0encouragement\u00a0from the field workers gave me and other\u00a0TB\u00a0patients hope for recovery. It\u00a0was\u00a0like I\u00a0had\u00a0gained strength and changed my plans for the future.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-381 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3x.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3x.webp 1200w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3x-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3x-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/3x-768x512.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Umarali\u00a0took\u00a0part in a training\u00a0event\u00a0organized by the USAID Tuberculosis Eradication Project in Central Asia.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After the information event, Umarali expressed his dissatisfaction with the\u00a0way\u00a0he was\u00a0treated. He\u00a0explained\u00a0to those\u00a0present that tuberculosis\u00a0was\u00a0a treatable disease\u00a0with\u00a0no hereditary predisposition.\u00a0Umarali\u00a0took\u00a0a\u00a0bold\u00a0step by\u00a0complaining to an employee of the tuberculosis center\u00a0in\u00a0the city of Bokhtar\u00a0about their\u00a0disrespectful attitude towards\u00a0patients with\u00a0tuberculosis. As a result, the\u00a0behavior\u00a0of the medical\u00a0professional\u00a0was\u00a0deemed\u00a0unacceptable. The management of the TB center\u00a0emphasized\u00a0to all staff\u00a0members\u00a0that\u00a0patients with\u00a0tuberculosis should be treated with\u00a0respect.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-382 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/4x.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/4x.webp 1200w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/4x-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/4x-1024x575.webp 1024w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/4x-768x431.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Umarali was able to\u00a0protect\u00a0his rights and\u00a0get\u00a0the\u00a0treatment\u00a0he needed.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In May 2020,\u00a0Umarali&#8217;s\u00a0doctor informed\u00a0him\u00a0that he had\u00a0completely\u00a0recovered\u00a0from his illness. Umarli was\u00a0overjoyed\u00a0with this news and\u00a0started\u00a0to rebuild his life with new\u00a0energy. He\u00a0began\u00a0actively\u00a0searching\u00a0for a job and\u00a0learned\u00a0that the USAID Tuberculosis Eradication\u00a0Project\u00a0in Central Asia was\u00a0seeking\u00a0a field worker.\u00a0Based\u00a0on his knowledge\u00a0of\u00a0tuberculosis and desire to help\u00a0others,\u00a0he applied for this position. His\u00a0skills\u00a0and\u00a0enthusiasm\u00a0were\u00a0recognized,\u00a0and he was\u00a0hired\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0job.\u00a0In\u00a0his\u00a0new role, Umarli actively participates in\u00a0identifying\u00a0new cases of\u00a0tuberculosis, advises patients on treatment\u00a0regimens,\u00a0and provides social\u00a0support\u00a0to\u00a0those\u00a0facing\u00a0drug-resistant\u00a0forms of the disease. He fights\u00a0against\u00a0discrimination and violations of the rights of vulnerable groups,\u00a0both at work and in\u00a0daily\u00a0life. In his radio\u00a0interviews, Umarali\u00a0speaks\u00a0about the importance of\u00a0supporting\u00a0tuberculosis patients and the disease itself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-385 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/6x.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"674\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/6x.webp 1200w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/6x-300x169.webp 300w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/6x-1024x575.webp 1024w, https:\/\/ntp.tj\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/6x-768x431.webp 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Supporting tuberculosis patients\u00a0as they\u00a0follow\u00a0their\u00a0treatment regimen is\u00a0an integral\u00a0part of Umarali&#8217;s daily\u00a0routine.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As of June 2020, the USAID Tuberculosis Eradication\u00a0Project\u00a0in Central Asia\u00a0conducted surveys of\u00a0approximately\u00a037,000\u00a0individuals\u00a0from vulnerable and high-risk groups in Tajikistan,\u00a0and more than 100,000 in Central Asia\u00a0overall.
