Cooperation in the prevention of tuberculosis in Tajikistan/Stop TB Partnership, Tajikistan
Cooperation between civil society, members of parliament, journalists, and bloggers to fight tuberculosis.
From May 16-18, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection of Population of Tajikistan, in collaboration with the USAID Tuberculosis Eradication Project in Central Asia and the PAS Center, hosted two significant events:
A forum for civil society organizations focused on accountability in achieving regional and global targets for tuberculosis control.
Regional seminar on “Strengthening media coverage of tuberculosis”. Representatives of civil society, members of parliament, journalists and bloggers attended this event. Their participation helped to deepen our understanding of the issues related to tuberculosis and discuss solutions. The event was attended by representatives from national and local non-governmental organizations, associations of people living with tuberculosis, community groups, religious organizations, professional associations, foundations, and journalists from Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as Eastern European countries like Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia.
During the three-day meeting, representatives from nine countries shared their experiences and discussed the roles of MPs, civil society, and the media in promoting accountability for global and regional objectives. This event took place on the eve of a high-level UN General Assembly meeting on tuberculosis, scheduled for September 2023.
On the third day of the forum, participants from the summit of deputies from the European Parliament and Central Asia on tuberculosis control, organized by the Caucus Global TB group, as well as the regional seminar “Strengthening Tuberculosis Coverage in the Media”, held as part of the USAID project, joined the event. In total, over one hundred representatives from civil society, parliamentarians, journalists, and bloggers from Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Eastern Europe participated in these three events.
As a result, a joint statement was issued. In this document, representatives from the World Tuberculosis Forum and civil society organizations reiterated their commitment to making every effort to eliminate tuberculosis. They also agreed on an action plan to ensure a sustainable political response to the disease and mitigate the effects of future pandemics in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. These measures are necessary to achieve the goals set by the UN High-Level Summit in 2023.
